The Compassionate Use Act of 1996 (Proposition 215) ushered in 20 years of freedom – a time that now seems like the Golden Age of Weed. Dispensaries popped up all over the state. Patients could experiment with a stunning array of marijuana strains for different ailments. They tried different delivery systems such as edibles, tinctures, and concentrates. There were product rollouts and happy hours. Samples were shared. Sampling led to experimentation. Experimentation led to discovery.
I personally witnessed nothing short of a miracle when an elderly friend who was wracked with pain from scoliosis, and miserably confused because of sundowners syndrome, came to life before my very eyes, engaged me in lively conversation, enjoyed a meal, refused her prescription pain medications, slept soundly, woke up the next day without pain, and wolfed down a big breakfast, still chatting amiably. All from eating a tiny handful of medicated goldfish I brought home from a “Get Happier Hour” at the 99 High dispensary in Venice Beach.
Stories of relief, even healing, made the rounds. Anecdotal evidence of cures for cancer, tumors, seizures, and disorders like Dravet syndrome in children were eagerly passed around. Those discoveries led to new strains being developed for specific diseases.
